Scottish Cup 2nd Round: Deveronvale v Broxburn Athletic 28 October 2023
Broxburn made the long trip up north to Banff for their Scottish Cup 2nd Round tie to face Highland League Deveronvale.
The Brox made 2 changes from the side who beat Hutchison Vale last week in the league welcoming back club captain Locke and Heath for Gillen and Binnie.
Deveronvale hadn’t been in action since 7 October when they lost 3-1 at home to Nairn County, who Broxburn had eliminated from the Scottish Cup in the last round. Vale made 4 changes Bradford, Watson, Allan and Dlugosz for the suspended McKay, Park, Angus and Mitchell.
In the 2nd minute Watson swung over a dangerous looking cross which Ormsby retrieved at the back post he did well to cut back but play was stopped for an infringement.
The Brox made their first real attack in 6 minutes Locke playing the ball wide to R.Nimmo who advanced and shot past the right hand post.
Heath had a good run on the left 2 minutes later being thwarted by Bradford.
The Brox continued to get more into the game Locke and R.Nimmo combining , the former getting in a shot which took a deflection to earn a corner.
From the corner R.Nimmo played into the near post Heath head flicked towards goal but McIntosh saved comfortably.
In the 11th minute Locke was fouled by Noble with the Vale player picking up a booking. Heath took the free kick which was floated in but collected comfortably by McIntosh.
Petermann cut in from the right in the 16th minute and unleashed a shot which was always high and over the bar.
Ormsby then played the ball inside to Allan whose shot was blocked it broke to Petermann whose was on target but straight to Watt.
In the 19th minute Heath slipped the ball to Locke on the left who played infield to Turner who shot forcing McIntosh to tip round the post. R.Nimmo took the kick high to the back post Page played the ball back to Davidson whose cross was pinpoint for BRASS to power a header into the net.
Page did well 5 minutes later to cut out a long ball forward to Allan and knock it back to Watt.
In 28 minutes Brass was fouled by Read. R.Nimmo took the kick high into the wind which McIntosh had to keep a close eye on and collected at his near post.
On the half hour Locke and Heath combined well on the left Heath forcing a save from McIntosh with his feet.
Turner was next to try a curling effort in the wind which just cleared the bar.
The Brox continued to press for the all important 2nd goal after good play down the left a Turner effort had to be saved by McIntosh.
A long ball forward from Vale found Allan who advanced and hit a great shot which Watt did brilliantly to save diving to his left to parry for a corner.
Noble took the corner the ball breaking to McLellan whose shot was blocked for another corner. Petermann took the kick but Brass headed clear.
This was definitely Deveronvale’s best spell of the game now Watson beating 2 Brox defenders getting into the box but slipping at the key moment.
The home side had a great chance to equalise in 42 minutes Turner was adjudged to have handled the ball just outside the penalty box in a central position. Noble took the free kick but his effort hit the wall.
In a good end to the half Noble hung up a cross to the back post with Petermann getting his head to the ball which looped over the bar.
HALF TIME: Deveronvale 0 – 1 Broxburn Athletic
Deveronvale started the 2nd half on the front foot Watson having a shot from the edge of the area but his effort went just wide.
The home ascendency continued from a free kick Noble found Ormsby who played into Petermann whose cross found Allan who couldn’t get enough on his flick as Watt saved comfortably.
Ormsby then again did well to set up another chance for Watson which once again his shot went wide of the post.
In 57 minutes from a long ball forward Heath made a good run but keeper McIntosh did well to anticipate the wingers run and he cleared.
On the hour Noble played a good long ball forward to Ormsby who got to the bye line but Page defended brilliantly to clear the wingers cut back.
In 62 minutes R.Nimmo was sent clear of the home defence but the wee winger pulled up sharply and collapsed to the ground when in full flight.
After treatment R.Nimmo couldn’t continue Douglas his replacement and Binnie replaced Heath.
Locke burst through in midfield and tried to find Binnie on the left but Goldie did well to block the pass.
The same combination were involved again in 67 minutes Locke finding Binnie this time and the striker getting off a shot which stretched McIntosh parried into the air and completed the save by catching on his line.
Watson was booked for Deveronvale.
In 72 minutes Park replaced Dlugosz.
A minute later Allan was booked for a foul on Turner.
A neat Brox move saw Locke play a ball to Brass down the right who got to the bye line crossed to Douglas who head flicked on but couldn’t get to Binnie at back post.
In 75 minutes Goldie was booked for a foul on Binnie.
Munro then followed him into the book for a foul on Watson.
Locke swung over a great cross from the right in 79 minutes McLellan did well to clear with Douglas on hand to profit from any mistake.
The game was becoming quite stretched now Ormsby cutting inside from the wing getting off a great shot which Watt brilliantly plucked out of the air when it looked as though it may trouble the top corner of the net.
Moyles was booked in 81 minutes and had to go off injured being replaced by D.Nimmo.
In 86 minutes Bradford was booked for a foul on Douglas.
Mitchell replaced Watson for Vale in 87 minutes.
Binnie played a brilliant ball wide to Brass on the right he got into the penalty box and tried to cross the ball to Douglas but Noble brilliantly intercepted at the concession of a corner.
Into injury time and Deveronvale made another change Hamilton going on for Ormsby.
The Vale were throwing caution to the wind now another Noble free kick headed out by Davidson for a corner. Petermann took the kick hanging high in the air with the Brox defence conceding another corner.
From the next corner the Brox cleared to Turner as a break was emerging Mitchell fouling the midfielder at the expense of picking up a yellow card.
The Brox ran down the remaining seconds of the clock to record a great result and advancement to the 3rd round.
