Broxburn travelled to Coatbridge on Tuesday night for our first midweek Lowland League game of the season, where we take on Albion Rovers.  

Albion Rovers finished season 23/24 in ninth position. In pre-season, the club made 4 additions to the first team in pre-season. From Cumbernauld Colts comes experienced defender Callum Hume and 21-year-old centre midfielder Kai Fitzpatrick. The club also added winger Paul Kennedy from Broomhill & left back Marcus Lavery from University of Stirling. The club is managed by ex-Rangers, Airdrieonians and Hearts player Sandy Clark, who is assisted by George Paterson. Going into the game, Rovers are undefeated in the Lowland League. In their last fixture, the drew at home last Saturday to Caledonian Braves, 1-1 at Cliftonhill. Callum Home was the scorer for Albion.

It was warm but cloudy in Coatbridge as the teams emerged from the old main stand at Cliftonhill. Albion Rovers were in yellow & red strips, with red shorts and socks and start with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Broxburn are in all navy and start with a 4-4-2 diamond. Broxburn make 2 changes to the defeat against Linlithgow last Saturday. In come Bryan Mwangi and Jordan Pettigrew who replace Kyle Bell & Bob Watt.  

The game sees its first booking in only 4 minutes, and its for Broxburn midfielder Lewis Turner. The Albion Rovers winger goes down under the challenge and Turner goes to send the ball up the park and unintentionally hits the Albion player with the ball. Referee rushed over and flashed the yellow, but only gave the home side a throw in.  

On 8 minutes, Broxburn have a penalty! Andy Rodden is brought down on the edge of the area. Up steps Errol Douglas who slots his penalty into the right corner for his third goal of the season.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC 1 (Errol Douglas-Pen-9 Minutes)  

Albion tried to hit back and had a few chances. On 12 minutes, Bright Prince had a shot that lacked power and was easily collected by Broxburn keeper Pettigrew,  

On 22 minutes, Andy Rodden delivers a good cross for Broxburn captain Nick Locke whose header is saved by Albion keeper Connelly. Then, the home side had two consecutive corners, both expertly defended by Jonathan Page. On 36 minutes, Marky Munro with a good pass over finds Andy Rodden in space on the left, His ball in finds Nick Locke whose header is over the bar.   

On 41 minutes, Bright Prince manages to get away from two Broxburn players. He cuts it back to McKintosh whose shot is wide of target.  

GOAL! Broxburn have a second! Errol Douglas picks up the loose ball and his shot beats Albion keeper Connelly for his fourth goal in three games.

BROXBURN ATHLETIC 2 (Errol Douglas-44 Minutes)   

HALF TIME (2-0 Broxburn)   

Jordan Pettigrew’s clearance from a slack back pass deflects off Bright Prince and fly over to the right, Andy Rodden clears the danger for a throw in, with a well-executed sliding tackle. On 52 minutes, A good cross by Lewis Turner finds Errol Douglas who heads wide of target.  

We have a stoppage in play as Albion Rovers number 2 Adam Fernie is down injured, Unfortunately Fernie can’t continue and is replaced by Nathan Brown.   

On 57 minutes, Murray McKintosh Is booked for a foul on Lewis Turner.  

On the hour mark, Andy Rodden cross from a free kick finds Errol Douglas whose header is wide. On 69 minutes, Alassan Jones cross finds Greg Page. Greg Page lays it off for Jonathan Page whose shot is saved by Albion keeper Connelly.  

GOAL!  Broxburn score again! A Lewis Turner free kick takes a deflection sending Albion keeper Connelly the wrong way.

On 81 minutes, Broxburn keeper James Russell is booked for a foul.

On 84 minutes, Nick Locke is booked! From our viewpoint it looked like he took the ball. The resulting free kick is taken by Kennedy, whose effort is just over the bar.  

On 89 minutes, Albion Rovers winger Kennedy is booked for a late challenge.  

Just what the boys needed after a heavy defeat to Linlithgow last weekend, a good result against a good side. Now for Cumbernauld Colts at home.
