East Of Scotland Qualifying Cup 2nd Round: Broxburn Athletic v Kirkcaldy & Dysart – 9 August 2022

On another balmy evening for football at the Albyn Broxburn welcomed visitors Kirkcaldy & Dysart, who currently sit 3rd in the First Division, for a 2nd round East Of Scotland Qualifying Cup tie.
Broxburn showed 6 changes from the side who started against Blackburn on Saturday: Newall, Churchill, Gray, R.Nimmo, Brass and Binnie for Henderson, Jeffries, Sayers, Downie, Donaldson and Greenhill.
The visitors showed 3 changes from the side who lost at Crossgates 6-3 on Saturday, Gear, Breen and Bridgeford for Linton, Kirkham and Falconer.
In 5 minutes R.Nimmo put in a great ball from the right, Binnie tried to slide in to apply the finish but scooped the ball just wide.
Kirkcaldy showed they carried a threat in 9 minutes breaking to good effect through Kinnaird and Bridgeford on the wing where the latter outpaced Douglas with his cross just out of reach of Smith.
In 13 minutes a great strike from Wilkie from 35 yards had Donoghue scrambling in the home goal but the shot just goes over.
The Brox responded a minute later R. Nimmo getting in a great ball to the back post but Binnie’s header goes just over.
The striker has another excellent opportunity 2 minutes later from a Churchill cross but he can’t divert the ball past Gear.
The visitors prove way more accurate McKenzie sending in a great ball from the right where SMITH rises powerfully to give Kirkcaldy the lead on 19 minutes.
In 26 minutes Bridgeford hangs up a cross to the back post where Smith and D. Nimmo collide with the Broxburn player requiring attention.
Twelve minutes later and D.Nimmo is forced off injured and replaced by Clark.
The Brox incredibly have yet another injury in 41 minutes Douglas, who had been playing centre half, forced off with Sayers replacing him.
Kirkcaldy nearly added to their lead in 44 minutes Cooper’s corner from the right find Breen in space to get a free header which just goes over the bar.
In first half injury time Broxburn are struggling again in defence with a cross coming into the back post Smith has to stretch to make contact but he can’t get his effort on target.
Sayers then does brilliantly to make a last ditch challenge to prevent Bridgeford from breaking clear.
Then 5 minutes into stoppage time Broxburn have their best passing team move of the game with Brass slipping Newall through into the penalty box where he is brought down. Brass takes the subsequent penalty which is saved by Gear to his left.

In 58 minutes Bridgeford went on a run down the right beating Orru before letting rip with a great shot which flew just narrowly wide.
In 63 minutes Jeffries replaces Price for Kirkcaldy.
Gray does well to create a shooting opportunity which takes a deflection Gear does well to dive on the ball denying Binnie.

Gray played in a great ball in 81 minutes as Broxburn continued to press for an equaliser but both Binnie and then Brass fluff their efforts.

Five minutes later and they are rewarded from another fast break SMITH steadies himself and lobs the ball over the advancing Donoghue.
HALF TIME EXTRA TIME: Broxburn Athletic 1 – 2 Kirkcaldy & Dysart
In 110 minutes McKenzie was booked followed by Sinclair for the Brox.
From a great Sinclair run in 114 minutes down the right he sends over a peach of a cross Brass can’t gather first time but a mistake from a Kirkcaldy defender allows BRASS a further opportunity which he duly takes drilling the ball low and hard into the right corner of the net.
Broxburn have a glorious chance to win the tie in 118 minutes Sinclair again putting over a cracking cross but Binnie slips at the vital moment at the back post.
Sinclair was also booked for Broxburn. Likewise McKenzie for Kirkcaldy.

To penalty kicks, Henderson and R.Nimmo scored for Broxburn, Donoghue pulled off 2 cracking saves from Falconer and McKenzie. Orru slotted his kick into the net and Jeffries crashed his penalty off the bar to give Broxburn the win.
A real Jeckyl and Hyde performance from the home side but credit the players for never giving up. Kirkcaldy & Dysart contributed greatly to an entertaining cup tie and will be gutted they couldn’t hold the leads they had in the game. A stern test of Broxburn’s credentials awaits this Saturday at unbeaten Jeanfield Swifts in Perth.
FULL TIME AFTER PENALTIES: Broxburn Athletic 2 – 2 Kirkcaldy & Dysart (3-0 penalties)
