East of Scotland Premier League – Tranent Juniors v Broxburn Athletic –
12/02/2022
Broxburn travelled east to to face title chasing Tranent at a very wet and windy Foresters Park. The Brox
made 4 changes from last weeks 3-1 win against Tynecastle. Dan Nimmo, Nicol, Mair and a Trialist
replacing Newall, Gray, Binnie and Tait.
Tranent made 3 changes from their last game on 29 January, Mason for Swain in goal, with McKenzie
and Knox replacing Greig and McCormack.
The home side made a bright start, Knox and Anderson combining well down the left with the former
firing in a shot which hit Gillen and went out for a corner.
From the corner Bauld won a header at the back post setting up Somerville but his shot hit the bar and
was cleared.
Broxburn were playing against the wind and were struggling to get a foothold in the game Murphy hitting
a shot just over the visitors bar in 5 minutes.
Problems continued to come down the left side Anderson and Knox again prominent. Knox’s cross was a
great one laying the ball on a plate for McIntosh but he somehow managed to scoop the ball over the bar
from 6 yards.
In 7 minutes Mair fouled Knox and from the free kick taken by Stevenson to Rutherford whose cross hit
Gillen the ball bouncing up and hitting his hand. The referee correctly waved away home penalty
appeals.
Broxburn were playing Brass as a lone striker trying to hit him with long balls. The visitors played a nice
move down the left Donaldson’s pass sending Gillen down the wing his cross blocked and cleared by the
home defence.
In 15 minutes a neat move from Tranent down the right with Stevenson playing the ball to Somerville
who fired over a dangerous cross which was well taken low down by Donoghue.
Anderson was having a great game for the home side and in 18 minutes he played a great through ball
to McIntosh but Donoghue was sharp off his line and got to the ball first to deny the striker.
In 19 minutes Broxburn put together their best move again down the left Donaldson hanging up a high
cross in the wind to the back post which Mair won but he couldn’t find one of his colleagues with the
home side clearing.
Broxburn went closer in 24 minutes again good play down the left Greenhill finding the trialist who found
Brass who sent over a great cross Mair sliding in at the back post but he couldn’t direct his effort on
target going just wide.
The Brox were growing into the game now and a great long ball from Greenhill needed a timely
intervention from Bauld to prevent Brass getting a run on goal.
Tranent responded in 27 minutes Knox once again cut in from the left but his shot was straight at
Donoghue. The same player went close again after a Greenhill error shooting narrowly past the post.
In 33 minutes Bauld and Rutherford combined down the left with the cross being well defended by
Murray for a corner. From the corner Donoghue didn’t claim the ball with the visitors defence doing well
to clear their lines.
The trialist played a great ball to Brass 2 minutes later but his shot was well blocked and cleared.
In 37 minutes from a foul on Stevenson, Rutherford took the kick quickly to ANDERSON who was not
closed down and allowed to steady himself before unleashing a 30 yard shot which flew into the top
corner of the net past Donoghue.
In 40 minutes a Knox cross from the left found Stevenson whose first shot was blocked by Nimmo and
his second effort was shot straight at Donoghue.

In 43 minutes from a short free kick taken by Greenhill, Donaldson’s cross was on the money but well
taken by Mason with Brass waiting to pounce on any error.
Half Time: Tranent Juniors 1 – 0 Broxburn Athletic
Tait replaced the injured Mair for Broxburn at the break.
In 47 minutes good work from Nicol as he laid the ball off to Donaldson who cracked a shot from 20
yards but it flew just wide.
Knox put over a dangerous cross from a free kick 2 minutes later which Donaldson won but there were
no Tranent players on hand to provide a finish.
The home side should have doubled their advantage in 55 minutes Stevenson sending McIntosh away
having outpaced Nimmo. Once again the finish was poor firing wide of the post.
Barker replaced Greenhill for Broxburn and in 65 minutes Miller and Docherty replaced Knox and
Somerville.
In 69 minutes following a foul on Tait, Donaldson’s free kick was gathered by Mason but he then dropped
the ball but recovered before any Broxburn player could take advantage.
Broxburn had a real let off in 71 minutes substitute Docherty’s cross being blocked for a corner by
Barker. From the kick the ball broke to Miller whose shot was brilliantly blocked on the goal line by Barker
and scrambled clear.
In 74 minutes Tait won a corner after a good run down the right. He then got in a shot from the corner
which was blocked and his second effort saved at his post by Mason.
In 76 minutes there were loud claims for a penalty when Harrison showed great strength to usher
McIntosh off the ball.
In 83 minutes with Broxburn pushing on to try and grab an equaliser Barker clipped a nice ball through
for the trialist to chase but it just eluded him.
In 84 minutes Wringe replaced McIntosh. Rutherford was then booked for a foul on Tait.
The home side then passed up another opportunity to seal the game Wringe outpacing Nimmo but he
shot wide with Miller unable to divert the ball into the net either.
Into injury time and Miller was booked for kicking the ball away.
With Broxburn all up the field for a free kick the ball was cleared giving a 3 on 1 break away which
Docherty couldn’t convert denied by a great save from Donoghue.
Conditions made things difficult for both sets of players but it was the home side who coped better
leading them to a deserved win. Broxburn put a lot into the game but just couldn’t fashion clear cut
chances especially when conditions were in their favour. A tough game awaits next week against another title contender Penicuik Athletic .
