South Challenge Cup 2nd Round: Whitburn v Broxburn Athletic – 15 October 2022
Broxburn made the short journey to face 2nd Division Whitburn in the 2nd round of the South Challenge Cup. After a great result over Penicuik last week the Brox made 2 changes to the starting XI B.Donaldson replacing Newall and Henderson for Douglas.
Whitburn were looking to keep their good form going sitting second in the league following last Saturdays 4-1 home success against Craigroyston.
In the 3rd minute a long ball forward from Harrison saw Potts in the home goal advance to the edge of the penalty area to clear with Binnie in close attendance.
In a neat Broxburn move Greenhill played in a ball to Brass at the edge of the penalty box who appeared to be held back as he turned but the referee saw nothing amiss.
A fine ball from Binnie sought out Henderson who was beaten to the ball by Potts who once again had advanced far from his line to clear.
Binnie again was prominent again in 8 minutes doing well to keep the ball in at the bye line he created a shooting opportunity which he blazed over after his excellent lead up work.
A free kick from Tomaszewski was lofted high into the box and won by McGarahan but there was not enough power on his effort to trouble Blair.
Moments later there was a flare up inside the Broxburn half Harrison lifting his hands and slightly pushing Thomson in the chest who went down dramatically which the referee saw as a red card.
To complete a disastrous few minutes for the Brox a long throw in from the right by Stokes was headed back by G. DONALDSON and found its way into the bottom left hand corner of the net.
In 23 minutes a tactical switch with Henderson withdrawn and McConnell on.
In 28 minutes from a Greenhill free kick from the left Potts tried to claim the ball but dropped it with the referee awarding a foul against the keeper.
In 31 minutes Greenhill sent Binnie away down the left and he did well to earn a corner. Greenhill’s corner was right on the money but scrambled off the line by Potts for another corner.
The home defence failed once again at defending the next corner again from Greenhill after a scramble G.DONALDSON was at the back post to fire the loose ball into the roof of the net. Time 32 minutes.
At the other end from a Maguire corner, McGarahan won the header but was cleared by the Brox defence. This led to a break Clark playing a fine through ball to BRASS who hit a thunderous shot into the roof of the net from 20 yards. Goal of the season contender. Time 37 minutes.
In 42 minutes Whitburn started to look as though they were beginning to use their man advantage better with Tomaszewski and Duncan playing a neat 1-2 for the left back to cross which was blocked for a corner. From the corner Thomson shot wide.
In 45 minutes a nice patient build up from the home side passing the ball nicely created an opportunity for Liddell whose shot was brilliantly saved by Blair with the follow up effort from Crawford flagged off side which the young keeper also saved.
Stokes was booked in the first half.
HALF TIME: Whitburn 1 – 2 Broxburn Athletic
Whitburn made a change at half time Martin coming on for Stokes.
The substitute had an immediate impact in 48 minutes doing well to chase a ball down to the bye line on the left his cross saw the Broxburn defence motionless with CRAWFORD steadying himself and curling a shot into the top right hand corner to tie the game.
Two bookings followed one for each side in 56 and 57 minutes respectively McGarahan for the home side Sayers for the visitors.
In the following minute a ball swung in from the right by Liddell saw Crawford put the ball into the net but ruled offside.
Whitburn were definitely having the better of it now on the hour once again from a throw in Duncan was clean in on the left side but he hit the side netting with his shot.
Broxburn made 2 changes in 63 minutes R.Nimmo for Binnie and Newall for Gillen.
In 68 minutes G.Donaldson played a great ball down the left to send R.Nimmo away his cross however intended for Brass was too strong.
In 73 minutes it becomes 10 v 10 when after a G.Donaldson challenge on Duncan both players went to ground with the Whitburn player appearing to lift his hands towards the Brox player saw the referee send Duncan off and book G.Donaldson. Thomson was also booked.
In 75 minutes Maguire played in a free kick from the right which Crawford won but his header looped wide.
From a poor B.Donaldson clearance Thomson volleyed a shot just wide.
Broxburn constructed their best move of the half in 78 minutes McConnell playing a nice ball down the left to G.Donaldson his cross found Clark who couldn’t get enough on his shot and was cleared.
Two minutes later and Broxburn go even closer R.Nimmo playing in Brass who got a shot off which Potts did well to save at his near post.
In 83 minutes Gray replaces Greenhill.
Another defensive lapse from the visitors presents a chance to Liddell but he dragged his shot wide.
Then in 87 minutes with extra time looming B.Donaldson plays a long free kick into the box Gray controls neatly his shot being blocked falling to NEWALL who brilliantly places a shot into the left corner of the net for his first ever Broxburn goal.
McIntyre then replaced Maguire for Whitburn.
In 89 minutes a long hopeful ball forward from Boyle sees Blair completely misjudge the flight and he has to look lively to tip the ball round the post.
With Whitburn all pushed forward the ball was cleared putting R.Nimmo in the clear Milton was all over the Brox winger tugging him back quite clearly which incredibly the referee allowed the ball breaking to Gray who worked his way in from the right and his chipped effort was deflected over the bar.
In the 93rd minute from another long ball Newall misjudged the flight this time allowing Liddell in on the left Blair doing brilliantly to block his effort and the follow up from Crawford.
In 94 minutes Hamilton and M.Maguire came on for Tomaszewski and Milton. Potts then launched a long free kick from inside his own half once again Broxburn do not win the header and McGarahan gets his effort on target but brilliantly thwarted by Blair.
