Broxburn Athletic travelled the short distance to Prestonfield for the Union Canal Derby vs Linlithgow Rose.

Linlithgow Rose finished season 23/24 in 8th position. The club is managed by Gordon Herd, who is assisted by John Millar & Eammon Fullerton. The club have been active in the transfer market this summer. With the additions of Sean Brown from Spartans, Jacob Comerford from East Fife & Jake Henderson from East Kilbride. The club also announced the signing of Auchinleck Talbot defender Craig McCracken last week. In the clubs opening game of the 2024/24 season, Linlithgow lost 1-0 away to Berwick Rangers last Saturday.

The teams emerge to a good crowd at Prestonfield for the first Union Canal derby in over a year, Linlithgow Rose are in maroon shirts, white shorts and maroon socks and are

playing a 4-3-3 formation. Broxburn Athletic are in their changed kits. Gold & black shirts, shorts and socks and start with a 4-4-2 diamond formation. Broxburn Athletic make 4 changes from the team that defeated Blackburn midweek in come Bob Watt, Jonathan Page, Lewis Turner, Alassan Jones & Errol Douglas who replace Jordan Pettigrew, Kieran Moyles, Callum Heath, Ross Nimmo and Darren Downie in the starting eleven.

Linlithgow are first to threaten on 2 minutes. A long ball forward finds Sean Brown in behind the Broxburn defence. But the ex-Spartans players effort is saved by Bob Watt. On 4 minutes, Sean Brown bullies Andy Rodden of the ball over on the left and picks up possession with just the keeper to beat. His low effort is saved again by Bob Watt. Another long ball finds Linlithgow’s Louis Maguire in on goal, but Broxburn midfielder James Russell does well to intercept and knock out for a Linlithgow corner.

GOAL! Linlithgow take the lead. Dylan Patterson’s picks up just outside the box. He cuts inside and scores a superb effort into the top left corner leaving Bob Watt no chance.

First in the referee’s book is Broxburn’s Marky Munro for a foul, seemed a bit harsh.

GOAL! Linlithgow have a second goal! Sean Brown collects from a Callum Rae cross and lays it off for Laurie Devine who scores high into the net.

Next in the book is Lewis Turner for a foul on 16 minutes. Broxburn skipper Nick Locke has a shot saved by Linlithgow keeper Binnie. On 20 minutes, Lewis Turner’s free kick from the left is right over the goalmouth but has no takers and rolls out for a goal kick.

GOAL! Broxburn pull one back. A corner by Lewis Turner finds Jonathan Page who heads home at the back post for his first goal for the club.

Big chance for Broxburn right on half time. A long ball forward fids Alassan Jones in on the right. His effort only hits the side netting.
