BROXBURN ATH V NEWTONGRANGE STAR

Attendance 148

East of Scotland Premier League – Broxburn Athletic v Newtongrange Star
– 31/07/2021
On a dreich afternoon at the Albyn Broxburn welcomed Newtongrange Star. With neither side in
great form it was a crucial game for both teams to try and kick start their seasons.
Broxburn showed 3 changes from the side who were beaten by Tranent in midweek Purves for
Melvin, Greenhill for Barker and Binnie for Tait. Newtongrange also made changes from their
midweek loss to Crossgates, McIntosh, Trialist 14 and McBay for Tait, Davies and Rixon.
The visitors got off to a great start in 2 minutes from a corner with the home side static
FERGUSON hit a great shot into the net from 16 yards.
This set back seemed to affect Broxburn as they struggled to string passes together whilst the
visitors seemed far more comfortable and sharper in their play.
Broxburn forced Brennan into a save but only a tame back header from Binnie.
Things got even worse for the Brox in13 minutes when Wallace let a speculative PEDEN shot go
under him and into the corner of the net.
Broxburn were left with a mountain to climb in 19 minutes when from a free kick just inside the
Brox half Nelson's kick drifted to the back post which was won by the head of Hamilton whose
header picked out SMITH who had the simplest of tasks to prod the ball into the net.
A shell shocked Brox tried to pull a goal back in 22 minutes Binnie being fouled 20 yards out,
Nimmo taking the free kick but saved by visiting keeper Brennan.
Nelson dispossesed Nicol in midfield and cracked an ambitious shot goalwards from 35 yards
which Wallace saved.
Good work from Binnie on the half hour forced a corner which Ross took, Grant winning the
header at the back post but not able to direct to a red shirt.
In 32 minutes a lifeline for the Brox after determined play from Nicol, the visitors failed to clear
the ball, which went to NIMMO who drilled in a shot which beat Brennan all ends up.
In a very open game chances at both ends in 36 minutes, a good run from Binnie saw him play in
Ross but his shot was blocked. The visitors went straight down field with more defensive
indecision allowing Bremner to knock the ball past Wallace but thankfully Grant was on hand to
stop the ball going into the net.

In 42 minutes Greenhill won a corner, although the ball did appear to come off him however
and the Brox made the award count Ross taking the kick PURVES rising above the Nitten
defence to head into the net.
Broxburn had the bit between their teeth now as a great move down the left saw Greenhill get a
shot off which was blocked for a corner.
In a Jeckyl and Hyde type performance from the home side a fairly harmless cross from
McIntosh was dropped by Wallace and scrambled clear.
Half Time Broxburn Athletic 2 – 3 Newtongrange Star
Broxburn made 2 half time changes, Newall for the injured Hutchison and Brass for Binnie.
Brass was quickly into the thick of the action forcing Brennan into a save.
In 53 minutes Ross cut in from the left and fired in a shot which took a deflection for a corner.
Ross's corner found Brass at the back post whose header was blocked for another corner. In a
good spell of home pressure the ball fell to Nicol who fired wide and over the bar.
The game continued to be wide open Newtongrange winning a corner in 56 minutes cleared by
Brass with McIntosh firing in a shot from the clearance which was blocked. Straight down the
other end and a Ross effort suffered a similar fate.
The Brox should have drawn level in 58 minutes a Brass cross picking out Wright in splendid
isolation with the goal gaping he headed over.
On the hour Newtongrange had a real chance Peden's cross from the left finding the trialist
unmarked at the back post but he made a hash of his shot mistiming completely. The visitors
went closer a minute later after a good move down the left McIntosh fired the ball into the net
but the linesman had flagged for offside.
Grant was booked for Broxburn in 61 minutes and then replaced for Barker. Brass was also
booked in the game for the home side.
Peden was then booked for a foul on Nimmo and Newtongrange had a further 3 player booked
in the game Webb, Nelson and McIntosh.
In 67 minutes the come back was complete Ross played the ball to Gillen whose cross was
touched back by Barker to GREENHILL who smashed an unstoppable shot into the roof of the
net, Brennan having no chance of saving.
The Nitten defence was now looking very frail and Brass was giving them a torrid time he broke
free but fired into the side netting.

In 68 minutes Nimmo did brilliantly to beat Peden to the ball and his cross picked out an
unmarked Ross who hit his shot straight at Brennan when a goal seemed likely.
Trialist 12 replaced Trialist 14 for Newtongrange in 70 minutes. The trialist made an immediate
impact getting his head to a Nelson corner but just too high and over the bar.
In 77 minutes Allum and Tait replaced Nimmo and Greenhill. The visitors replaced McIntosh
with Rixon moments later.
In 81 minutes a quickly taken free kick caught Broxburn napping Wallace denying Bremner a
goal.
Brass and Gillen both had decent efforts at goal before a real let off for Broxburn, Nelson
steadying himeself nicely to curl a shot which hit the home bar.
With 2 minutes remaining after a foul on Tait, Ross took the free kick which found Brass at the
back post but he headed over.
Into stoppage time with Broxburn pressing for a winner a Ross shot took a delection for a
corner. From the resultant corner Ross's cross found Wright whose header hit the head of
keeper Brennan and out for yet another corner.
Albyn Park erupted when Ross clipped in another great ball which a Nitten defender headed
straight up in the air, Nicol won the ball with his head directing the ball to an unmarked Allum
who volleyed the ball into the net for a 93rd minute winner!
A quite amazing game with every emotion gone through over the 90 minutes. The defensive
frailties were again cruelly exposed but what a great show of team resilience to get back in the

game and pull off the most unlikely of wins . The return of Gary Brass was hugely instrumental

in turning the game around . Tynecastle away next for the Brox .

BROXBURN ATH V TRANENT

Match Report  ATTENDANCE 248
East of Scotland Premier League – Broxburn Athletic v Tranent Juniors –
27/07/2021
Broxburn returned to Albyn Park after their first league win of the season at Whitehill Welfare
on Saturday on a balmy summer evening, welcoming high flying Tranent Juniors as visitors.
Broxburn showed a number of changes to Saturday's starting line up with Newall, Townsley,
Harrison replaced with Gillen, Melville(making his debut) & Nicol.
Tranent were first to threaten in the 3rd minute a Docherty cross being headed out of danger by
Wright only to fall to Watson whose shot struck the bar.
In 5 minutes Grant intercepted a poor Tranent pass and picked out Nimmo who advanced
towards goal before being well tackled by Thomson.
Tranent were denied the opening goal in 9 minutes by the linesman's flag as a Miller cross found
Watson who shot into the net.
Knox replaced Thomson in 14 minutes for Tranent.
Tait forced visiting keeper Swain into a mistake but his shot was blocked away for a corner.
From a long hopeful ball by Thomson, Wright appeared to mis-judge the flight of the ball which
bounced perfectly for WRINGE to lob the ball over the advancing Wallace to give the visitors the
lead.
Tranent were having a good spell in the game and in 19 minutes Miller found Docherty on the
left and his dangerous cross was deflected away for a corner.
The Brox retaliated a minute later with a good move of their own when Ross sent Tait away
down the left he got himself into position to shoot but from a diffficult angle his shot drifted
wide of Swain's right hand post.
The game continued to swing from end to end the visitors right full back Stevenson hitting a
cracking volley from the right which had Wallace scrambling across his line as it sneaked past his
left hand post.
In 22 minutes, on loan Spartan Joe Tait continued to cause Tranent difficulties down the left
with his pace and was having a great battle with Stevenson which the defender just got the
better of to prevent the Brox player getting clear.
Tranent were equally dangerous down their left side Docherty cutting in past Gillen from the left
and firing a shot just wide which Wallace in the home goal had to keep an eye on.
The visitors should have doubled their lead from a corner on the half hour when Thomson was
left unmarked but somehow headed wide. A real let off for the Brox.

Broxburn then had a great opportunity in 34 minutes, great work from Nimmo on the right saw
him beat his defender in the box and when a shot seemed certain he delayed by trying to beat
another man with his shot finally being blocked.
Another decent Broxburn move saw Nimmo send over a decent cross from the right which Tait
got on the end of but was flagged offside.
In 44 minutes Grant nicely intercepted a pass in midfield and played a fine ball to Nimmo on the
right whose cross was on the money but no one in red could get on the end of it and it ran
through to keeper Swain.
Half Time Broxburn Athletic 0– 1 Tranent Juniors
Allum replaced Tait for Broxburn in 46 minutes.
The visitors came out of the blocks firing in the 2nd half and from a short corner Docherty hit a
great shot which keeper Wallace did well to tip over the bar.
In 49 minutes Broxburn were made to pay when they failed to clear their lines Docherty put
over a great cross from the left and GREIG flicked the ball past Wallace into the bottom right
hand corner of the net.
Broxburn tried to retaliate in 53 minutes Nimmo's cross finding Barker but his effort was well
defended for a corner which nothing came of.
The home side were punished again in 58 minutes for only half clearing the ball KNOX hit an
unstoppable shot past Wallace into the net.
In 61 minutes a Gillen cross found Nimmo but his effort to fire goalwards was blocked.
A minute later Hutchison was booked for the home side, quickly followed in 65 minutes by
Murphy for Tranent.
In 65 minutes Broxburn made a double substitution Nimmo and Barker replaced by Binnie and
Greenhill.
In 67 minutes Ross won a corner from which the ball broke to Melvin who got in a goal bound
shot which was blocked away for another corner.
Tranent made changes Landon and Muirhead replaced Wringe & Watson.
In 73 minutes Cowley replaced Grant.
In the following minute Broxburn's best move of the half saw Binnie switch play from right to
left his pass picking out Ross who cut inside and stuck a great right foot shot which was just too
high.
In 76 minutes Tranent made their final changes replacing Murphy and Greig with Anderson and
McKenzie.
Substitute Greenhill played a great ball into the goal mouth which Allum got a glancing header
to but it wasn't enough to beat Swain.

Broxburn's persistence paid off in 82 minutes from a Binnie short corner, Ross crossed the ball
perfectly which GREENHILL headed into the visitors net. This seemed to galvanise the home side
and from a Tranent mistake Ross couldn't capitalise as he tried to find support inside him.
In 87 minutes, Docherty who had been a thorn in Broxburn's side the whole game saw another
well struck shot this time blocked by Nicol. The same player in the following minute was
thwarted by good defending from Wright and Hutchison.
In 93 minutes Knox hit a powerful shot from 25 yards which was well blocked by Wright for a
corner which the visitors made nothng of.
Another tough night for Broxburn against an excellent Tranent side which won't be far away
from honours this season. The home cause was certainly not helped by the defensive injury
situation. A chance comes again at the Albyn on Saturday to get back on track against
Newtongrange Star.

Penicuick Kicked of in glorious sunshine but into a strong west to east wind .Cameron Ross made a good early run but was blocked on edge of the box and the visitors cleared the danger . On 5 minutes Shaun Harrison sent a free kick into the box from the left but his ball in eluded everybody and went by the right hand post for a bye kick .Ten minutes into the game and Paul Tansey sent a cross over but was too strong for everybody and it cleared the danger area .

Good pressure from the home side saw Cammie Ross effort deflect for a corner on 15 minutes . The corner in was blocked and then fell to Ross Hutchieson who’s goal bound effort was headed clear and over the bar by Ryan Baptie .Penicuik saw two shots blocked on 18 minutes before Aaron Somerville fired a shot wide left from 18 yards . Straight up the other end a free kick 30 yards out from Cammie Ross saw Robert Watt make a excellent save pushing the ball round his post for a corner . Cammie saw an effort after a good run go wildly over the bar .

A minute later the deadlock was broke with a long ball over the home defence saw PAUL TANSEY clear to beat Connor Wallace in the home goal  to put the visitors in front .

Penicuik had the first effort in the second half when Tansey saw his shot gathered by Wallace . Aaron Somerville made space but shot wide and high on 51 minutes . Tansey made a good run down the left but was to strong with his cross and it went out for a throw in .  Great play down the right saw a great ball into Greg Binnie six yards out but his effort went straight at the keeper .

Broxburn Ath levelled things on 57 minutes when CAMERON ROSS gathered the ball down the left before sending a cross come shot into the box that found the far top right hand corner of the net .

Cameron Dawson tried to catch Wallace out with a free kick from just inside the Broxburn half but Wallace gathered easily . With the game nearing the end  the action in the last 15 minutes produced more talking points . Great play again saw a final shot from Joe Tait go just wide left . The visitors took the lead on 83 minutes when a corner into the six yard box was blocked twice before CAMERON DAWSON  forced the ball over the line  . With Broxburn pushing for an equaliser a long ball over the top saw AIDEN WELSH clear in a suspiciously offside position   free to run round Wallace unchallenged to seal the points with the home defence stunned there was no flag from the near side assistant .

Penicuik found time for a fourth in the last embers of the game with LUMBER KATELEZA scoring .

Disappointing the game ended this way as it was a tight close affair that no team deserved to lose the score line that it finished  . We will regroup and go to Dunbar on Tuesday evening to start and pick up points .
