We returned to league action after the Christmas period, with a home fixture against Tranent Juniors at Albyn Park on Saturday.
Tranent currently lie in third position, only a point of second Celtic B with two games in hand and three points off leaders East Kilbride. The club have won twelve, drawn six and lost three of their twenty-one fixtures so far this season.
The last meeting between the two sides was on Tuesday the 27th of February 2024 in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup Quarter Final. An injury time Nick Locke strike put Broxburn into the semi final with a 1-0 win on the night.
Players to watch for the hosts on Saturday include, ex Hibernian and Edinburgh City winger Danny Handling, left back Adam McGowan, right back Euan Bauld and striker Harry Girdwood. The club is managed by ex-Hearts youth player Jonny Stewart who is assisted by Steven Hislop
In the clubs last fixture, Tranent defeated Caledonian Braves at Foresters Park last Saturday in the Lowland League. Scorers for Tranent were Harry Girdwood and Ben Miller.

Broxburn make one change from the team that defeated Whitburn 1-0 in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup fourth round last Saturday. In comes Lewis Turner to replace Darren Downie.

Tranent create the first chance of the match on 8 minutes. Dean Brett finds Joe Viola on the left whose shot is saved by Bob Watt.

On 9 minutes, a Marcus Miller cross finds Owen Wardell, whose shot is saved by Tranent keeper Kelby Mason.

To the amusement of most of the supporters in attendance, on 17 minutes we have a stoppage in play as a dog got on the park next to the stand.

On 20 minutes, Tranent’s Scott Gray latches on to a long ball in behind the Broxburn defence. His shot is saved by Bob Watt.

Tranent have another chance on 25 minutes. An initial shot by Dean Brett is parried and, on the rebound, Brett’s shot is blocked by Greg Page.

GOAL! Tranent take the lead! From a corner, Broxburn clear as far as Joe Viola wide left. His cross finds Danny Handling and the ex-Hibernian midfielders shot is flicked home by Harry Girdwood for the opening goal of the game.

On 28 minutes, a shot by Danny Handling is saved by Bob Watt as Tranent push for a second before the half time break.

First booking of the game comes on 42 minutes. Marcus Miller is booked for a pull on Joe Viola.

On 43 minutes, Tranent have a dangerous free kick. Euan Greig takes and finds Danny Handling whose header is saved by Broxburn keeper Bob Watt.

Next in the book is Tranent’s Harry Girdwood for a foul on Bryan Mwangi on the touchline on 45 minutes.

On 46 minutes, a Lewis Turner shot is over the bar.

Deep in injury time Broxburn have a corner. The corner is fizzed in by Owen Wardell and Tranent keeper Kelby Mason palms it over the bar for another Broxburn corner. Tranent defend the resulting corner to take them to the half time break.

Broxburn start the better of the two teams in the second half. The first chance of the half comes on 46 minutes. Kyle Bell plays in Owen Wardell who drags his shot wide of target. On 47 minutes, Marky Munro has space high up the right flank. He delivers a good cross that is missed by two Broxburn players. On 49 minutes, Owen Wardell is close with a shot that is narrowly wide of the left-hand post. Wardell comes close again on 51minutes. His fizzed shot from the right is cleared of the line by Robbie McIntyre.

GOAL! Broxburn equalise! Bryan Mwangi is running at pace down the left. He picks out Kyle Bell with a good pass, Belly takes a great first touch before scoring with a powerful effort, low into the left corner.

It was more cup action for Broxburn on Tuesday night as we take on Perth side Jeanfield Swifts at Albyn Park in the East of Scotland qualifying Cup third round

Jeanfield Swifts currently lie in fourth position in the East of Scotland Premier League. Winning eight, drawing three and losing two of their thirteen fixtures so far.

No strangers to the Badgers, Swifts finished third last season in our East of Scotland Premier League 2023/24 championship winning season. three points behind second place side Musselburgh Athletic. In the last fixture between the sides, it was a 1-1 draw at Riverside Stadium last April in the East of Scotland Premier League. Christopher Dodd gave Swifts the lead on four minutes, but Broxburn hit back on seventy-three minutes, when a Jeanfield defender put the ball in his own net from a Gary Brass cross.

The club is managed by ex Luncarty gaffer Robbie Howden who has been in charge since June 2023. He is assisted by ex Luncarty player Chris Anton. Players to watch on Tuesday night are striker Rhys Davies, ex Rangers youth player Archie Campbell and recent signing, forward Mark Smith who joined the club from Sauchie on Monday.

To get to this stage in the competition. Broxburn defeated Blackburn United 5-0 in Albyn Park in July in the second round. Darren Downie scored twice while, Nick Locke, Greg Page and Alassan Jones all got on the scoresheet. Jeanfield Swifts defeated Bo’ness United 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium. Achie Campbell and Kyle Green secured the Perth sides place in Round three.

First chance of the match comes for the hosts on 4 minutes. A Finn McLeod Kay deflected shot is wide of target. On 6 minutes, Gary Brass has a shot wide for Athletic.

With a cracking bit of skill, Bryan Mwangi turns away from his marker and finds Fionn McLeod Kay, before playing in the running Mwangi, unfortunately the pass has too much on it for Mwangi.

Jeanfield create their first chance of the match on 15 minutes, a shot by Oliver Hamilton is wide of goal.

Huge chance for Broxburn. Greg Page plays a long ball forward that finds Owen Wardell, the wee man makes a great touch and unleashes a powerful volley that hits the upright. First in the referee’s book is Scott McRory Irving for a foul on 28 minutes. On 35 minutes, a Kyle Bell shot deflects for a corner. The resulting corner is half cleared, but Broxburn work the loose ball too Scott McRory Irving whose shot was saved by Swifts keeper Ben Swinton.

Next in the referee’s book is Jeanfield Swifts defender Kieran Stewart who fouled Broxburn striker Gary Brass on 39 minutes.

On 43 minutes, Owen Wardell takes it to the byline on the right before delivering a dangerous cross that is missed by stand in skipper Greg Page at a tight angle.

We are delayed for 10 minutes for an injury to the linesman who has cut his ear.

On 50 minutes, a dangerous cross from the left by Marcus Miller is missed by Gary Brass. On 53 minutes, Broxburn have another chance. Owen Wardell is fouled just outside the box on the right. Bryan Mwangi’s takes the free kick, and his powerful cross is headed wide by Marcus Miller. A minute later, Owen Wardell plays an excellent ball through for Bryan Mwangi, who takes a touch past outrushing Swifts keeper Ben Swinton before Kieran Stewart makes a vital block for the Perth side.

Broxburn Athletic take a break from league action this weekend, with the visit of West of Scotland current undefeated league leaders Clydebank in the South Regional Challenge Cup fourth round.

West of Scotland league leaders Clydebank Fc are still undefeated in the 2024/25 season. They have won eight and drawn one of their nine league fixtures. The club are on twenty-five points, four points ahead of second place Johnstone Burgh. The club play their home games at Holm Park, where they groundshare with local side Yoker FC. The club is managed by ex-Albion Rovers and East Stirling player Gordon Moffat. Players to look out for is ex Aberdeen and Dundee midfielder Nicky Low and experienced striker Nicky Miller who is the top scorer and ex Stranraer youth player, Keir Samson. In the clubs last fixture, they drew 0-0 in league action away at Largs Thistle, despite being down to ten men early in the game, with Adam Hodge seeing red in the 13th minute.

Broxburn returned to Albyn Park for a fixture against current league leaders Caledonian Braves, last Tuesday night.

Table toppers Caledonian Braves are still undefeated in the league. Winning 10 & drawing 5 of their 15 games so far this season. Striker Ross McNeil is not just the club’s top scorer, but the leagues top scorer with 14 goals. Joining McNeil with players to watch on Tuesday night, is strike partner Reg McLaren and midfielder’s Cammy Bremner and Lennon Walker. Plus, Centre Back pairing Daniel Martins and Robbie Stewart. In the last meeting between the two clubs, it was a 1-1 stalemate at Alliance Park back in early October.  Ross McNeil gave the hosts the lead on 6 minutes, with a header from close range. Broxburn equalised on 34 minutes. Greg Page’s 40-yard pass right to the feet of captain Nick Locke on the left. Locke cut inside, taking on the two defenders before slotting home into the right corner. Broxburn had chances to win the game, but it ended a draw in a poor lit Alliance Park. In Braves last fixture, they defeated Bo’ness United at Newton Park last Saturday 2-1, with Jack McDowal scoring and an 86th minute Greig Stewart goal, giving the Braves another big result on the road.

Broxburn Athletic make two changes to the team that defeated Berwick Rangers 3-0 last Saturday. In come Jonathan Page and Bryan Mwangi who replace Ruari Ellis and Owen Wardell.

The visitors are first to threaten on 2 minutes. Connor McLaren’s effort is way over the bar from a central position. Braves created a good move on 4 minutes. Reg Mclaren feeds in Aiden Clocherty, who’s cross in is well cleared by Broxburn right back Joseph Smith. On 8 minutes, Lennon Walker beats the offside trap and I through with just the keeper to beat. But Broxburn keeper Bob Watt makes a great block to deny the Braves striker.

Broxburn get up the park for this first time in the match on 11 minutes. Young full back Joseph Smith puts a ball in from the right that is read by Braves keeper Bernie White who comes of his line and collects the cross.

On 14 minutes, Braves striker Lennon Walker beats the offside trap and is through on the right. His shot from the right goes out for a throw in near the corner flag.

Some tidy play by Broxburn on 33 minutes. Good passing by Kyle Bell and Gary Brass, with the later spotting Alassan Jones in space wide left. But Caley keeper White reads it well again and collects.

Another huge two chances in quick succession for Braves. Aiden Clocherty beats the offside trap, and his shot is saved by Bob Watt. The resulting corner deflects to Lennon Walker, whose dangerous ball over the goalmouth is pushed away again by Broxburn keeper Watt.

First in the referee’s book was Broxburn right back Joseph Smith for simulation on 37 minutes.

Unfortunately, Broxburn midfielder Kyle Bell is down injured and has to be replaced.

Broxburn returned to Albyn Park on Saturday, for a league match against Berwick Rangers
Going into this match, Berwick Rangers lie in 13th position, winning four, drawing two and losing seven of their thirteen games so far. The club is managed by ex-Falkirk and St Johnstone defender Tam Scobbie. He is assisted by ex-Gala Fairydean manager and East Kilbride assistant Dean Shanks. The club is captained by ex-Hearts and Wigan youth player Jamie McCormack. The clubs top goal scorer so far is veteran striker Lewis Buchanan with four goals. In the clubs last fixture, they were eliminated from the Scottish Cup second round with a 1-0 defeat away to Forfar at Station Park last Saturday. Key players for Berwick today will be recent recruit Jamie Pyper who returns to the club for a second spell from East Stirlingshire. Broxburn Athletic make three changes from the Scottish Cup second round 1-0 win against Auchineck Talbot last Saturday. In come two new loan signings who make their debut this afternoon. Joseph Smith who joins us from Queens Park and Ruari Ellis from Kilmarnock, they join Owen Wardell in the starting eleven. They replace Jonathan Page, Luke Morris and Lewis Turner.

Broxburn are first to threaten on 6 minutes. Owen Wardell plays a ball forward that finds Errol Douglas who shoots wide of target from a tight angle. On 12 minutes, Broxburn have the ball in the back of the net through Gary Brass but its chopped off for offside.

Broxburn Athletic returned home to Albyn Park in league action in League action against East Stirlingshire on Saturday afternoon.

East Stirlingshire currently lie in 17th position in the Lowland league. The club is managed by ex-Cowdenbeath and Clyde player Pat Scullion. The club play their home games at the Falkirk stadium (Groundshare with local rivals Falkirk FC). The team is awash with experience. Ex Hearts midfielder Morgaro Gomis and ex Raith Rovers striker Greg Spence are a vital part of the club along with ex Cowdenbeath defender and club captain Jamie Pyper. The clubs top goal scorer this term, is Jamie Penker with six goals in the Lowland League. In the clubs last fixture, they defeated Cumbernauld Colts at the Falkirk Stadium last Wednesday night 5-0 in the Lowland League. Goals came from Ben Lamont and Shaun Brown who got two each and striker Greig Spence was also on the scoresheet.

Great direct running by Owen Wardell, he takes on the East Stirling left back and his whipped cross in has no takers and goes out for a goal kick to the visitors.

East Stirlingshire captain Jamie Pyper picks up an injury and can’t continue. Referee Gamble doesn’t allow Shire to make a substitution and East Stirling play three minutes with ten men. Eventually Pyper is replaced by Ben Lamont. Two minutes later there is another blow for East Stirling. Experienced midfielder Morgaro Gomes is also injured. He is replaced by Lewis Hynd.

Broxburn returned to Lowland League action on Saturday, with Cowdenbeath the visitors to Albyn Park.

Going into this match, Cowdenbeath lie in 15th position in the Lowland League table. The club appointed ex player Dougie Hill who replaced Bonnyrigg Rose bound Calum Elliot last May. He is assisted by ex-Brechin City legend Paul Mclean. Cowdenbeath have brought in numerous new players in the summer. Shay Burke, Sean Guiney, Ethan Clarke, Aaron Dunsmore & Sam Newman joined the club, all on free transfers. Loan signings include Riley Haston who joins from Bonnyrigg Rose, Rhys Walker joins from Falkirk reserves, Ruaridh Lynch joins from Dundee reserves, Jake Sutherland joins from Dunfermline reserves and Olly Whyte joins from Motherwell B. In the clubs last match, they defeated East Lothian side Ormiston Primrose 4-1 in the South Challenge Cup second round last Saturday. Goals came from Daryl Healy, Riley Haston, Gregor Johnston and an own goal, put the Fife side into round three of the competition. Cowdenbeath’s top goal scorer so far this season is Jamie Docherty with three goals.

Broxburn Athletic are in their traditional kits. Red and white shirts, white shorts and red and white socks. Cowdenbeath are in blue shirts, white shorts and blue socks. Broxburn make 3 changes from the side that won 10-2 against Nithsdale, in the South Challenge Cup second round last Saturday. In come captain Nick Locke, Lewis Turner and Jonathan Page, who replace Kieran Moyles, Gary Brass and Luke Morris.

After a slow start to the game, it was Broxburn who created the first chance on 9 minutes. Alassan Jones tees up Owen Wardell whose shot is over the bar.

On 13 minutes, Oliver Whyte’s free kick for Cowdenbeath was saved by Broxburn keeper Bob Watt.

Broxburn had their second chance of the match on 15 minutes. Scott McRory’s ball into a dangerous area has too much on it for the strikers and Cowdenbeath have a goal kick.

Big chance for Cowdenbeath on 19 minutes. Substitute Rhys Walker, beats the offside trap and is through with just keeper Bob Watt to beat. But the Broxburn keeper comes out, makes himself big and makes a great block. On 23 minutes, another Matty McDonald free kick is saved by Bob Watt.

On 24 minutes, Nick Locke sets up Owen Wardell who has space on the right, but the on-loan Bonnyrigg youngster put his effort wide of target.

GOAL! Broxburn take the lead. Kyle Bell’s ball in from the right finds Errol Douglas. The big man lays it off for Alassan Jones. Jones passes back to Errol, who scores it into the right corner for 1-0 Broxburn.

First yellow card of the match comes on the 31st minute for Cowdenbeath defender Gregor Jordan for a foul on Owen Wardell on the edge of the box. Nick Locke takes the resulting free kick and its just wide of target.

Broxburn have three chances in quick succession as they pushed for a second goal. Kyle Bell finds Errol Douglas in space, but his low powerful shot is well saved by Cowdenbeath keeper Ruaridh Lynch. Alassan Jones had a shot just wide and Owen Wardell’s effort was just over the bar.

On 42 minutes, Cowdenbeath’s Paul McLean is booked for a foul on Errol Douglas.

GOAL! Its 2-0 Broxburn! Andy Rodden’s free kick from the left finds skipper Nick Locke who times his run perfectly and scores low into the left corner.

GOAL! Two minutes after Broxburn’s third, we have the goal of the game. Kyle Bell finds Scott McRory-Irving who drives forward before shooting. His effort flies over Cowdenbeath keeper Lynch, kissing the bar and bouncing down into the net, superb finish!

Chance for Cowdenbeath on 52 minutes, Daryl Healy’s volley is over the bar.

On 57 minutes, an Andy Rodden shot from distance is over the bar for Broxburn. On 62 minutes, a shot by Alassan Jones is narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

Big chance for a Cowdenbeath consolation on 64 minutes, ball in from the right is flicked towards goal by Oliver Whyte, but his effort is just wide of target. They had another big chance three minutes later. Slack play by Lewis Turner, who gives away possession and lets in Cowdenbeath’s substitute Rhys Walker, but Broxburn defender Greg Page makes a great block and clears.

On 75 minutes, a fantastic bit of skill by Owen Wardell over on the left. He puts it through the legs of Cowdenbeath right back Aaron Dunsmore and flicking it round Gregor Jordan and using his pace to get to the ball and getting the cross away. Been great to watch today and his pace will cause problems.
