Scottish Cup 2nd Preliminary Round: Broxburn Athletic v Nairn County 23 September 2023

The First Round of the Scottish Cup proper was what was on the menu at the Albyn as opponents from Tier 5, 1 above the Brox, Highland League Nairn County made the long trip down from the North. This was a reverse of the fixture from the Covid interrupted season, 2020-21 where Broxburn were somewhat controversially beaten on penalties following what seemed a perfectly fair goal being chopped off at the end of extra time.

Broxburn made 2 changes to the side that beat Whitburn on penalties last Saturday, Moyles and new loan signing Ward replacing D.Nimmo and Campbell.

Nairn County currently sit 11th in the Highland League having had an indifferent start to their league campaign winning 3 games and losing 4. Nairn came into the game having beaten Inverurie Loco Works 4-0 last Saturday. Not surprisingly Nairn named an unchanged team which included ex Ross County, Finn Harps and Peterhead striker Conor Gethins and Ross Tokely who made 593 appearances for Inverness Caley.

Broxburn got off to an amazing start in the 2nd Munro’s cross deflected out for a corner off a visiting defender. Nimmo took the corner flighted perfectly for TURNER to bullet a header past keeper D.MacLean to give the hosts an early lead.

Both sides were cancelling each other out as they tried to gain an upper hand in the game.

In the 15th minute Page played a great long ball forward looking for R.Nimmo who set off in chase but D.MacLean in the Nairn goal was alert to the danger and collected the ball.

Young forced a corner off Munro for County, Gethins taking the kick which was met by Dingwall but his header was blocked and cleared.

Tokely played a long ball forward in the 20th minute to McLeod who chested the ball off to Gethins who sized up a shot from 25 yards but his shot was always rising.

Dingwall was booked in the 22nd minute.

R.Nimmo got a curling shot on target a minute later but MacLean saved comfortably at his near post.

Gethins won a corner on the Nairn right off Ward but the corner didn’t produce anything Douglas headed clear.

In the 26th minute C.Maclean strode purposefully forward feeding ball to Gethins but his cross was easily collected by Watt.

On the half hour Bremner was dispossesed in midfield by MacIntosh who saw Watt slightly off his line and ambitiously tried to take the keeper on from 45 yards but he didn’t connect well with his shot and Watt easily saved.

Munro curled a great long pass down the right wing to Brass who did well to beat C.Maclean, his cross from the byeline was hard and low which D. Maclean gathered at the 2nd attempt.

Nairn had their best move of the game in the 39th minute Gethins, Dey and Young combining well with Young’s shot blocked by a home defender and over the bar. Dingwall rose the highest at the corner but couldn’t direct his effort on target.

The Brox then punished the visitors Locke going on a surging run forward stopped illegally by Dingwall just outside the penalty box in a central position. PAGE took the free kick over the wall and hitting a Nairn defender and into the net to put Broxburn 2 goals to the good. Time 41 minutes.

Heath took again Turner challenged keeper Farrell for the ball with the keeper palming away only as far as D.Nimmo who controlled and turned to get off a shot and appeared to be brought down with the referee waving away home claims for a penalty. The ball broke to Heath who curled a shot straight to Farrell.

In 28 minutes Bremner was fouled by McInnes. Heath took the free kick and played the ball to Bremner who floated a ball into the box with Thomson taking no chances and conceded another corner. Heath took the corner deep to the back post where Brass had to stretch to win but his effort looped over the bar.

A slick move saw R.Nimmo play a ball into Locke whose first time pass set Munro in behind the visitors defence, the full back made inroads along the bye line before drilling in a cross which Boyle blocked for a corner. Heath’s corner brought nothing.

In 37 minutes great play from R.Nimmo as he drove forward into the box and played to Bremner who hit his shot first time which Farrell was equal to, the ball broke loose with Bremner getting the ball in a challenge with a Whitburn defender but the midfielder couldn’t get enough on his touch to trouble the keeper a second time.

Then the Brox were caught out in 58 minutes down the left side due to indecision in dealing with a ball forward, Crawford did well for Whitburn getting to the bye line, Watt who had left his line to try and cut the striker off then could only watch as the striker played a ball across the 6 yard box for LIDDELL to apply a finish into an empty net.

From the free kick which didn’t appear to be taken from the right spot Edwards took the kick with MCGARAHAN rising the highest to head the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past Watt to tie the score at 2-2. East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Jeanfield Swifts 5 September 2023

Broxburn returned to league action after Saturday’s Scottish Cup success v Lochee United with league leaders, on goal difference only, Jeanfield Swifts making the journey from Perth. Not surprisingly perhaps the Brox had an unchanged starting line up.

Jeanfield also had success in the Scottish Cup on Saturday defeating amateur side Cupar Hearts 3-0. Like Broxburn in the league only 2 points had been dropped all season.

In the 5th minute R.Nimmo sent in a great ball from the right which Reid seemed to get a touch on but the referee didn’t agree.

Jeanfield responded 3 minutes later Simpson skipped inside his man on the right and curled a left foot  shot just wide to the left.

A nice ball over the top by Page sent R.Nimmo scurrying down the wing where he reached the ball and played in a great cross which Whithead and Mollison dealt with to clear any danger.

Jeanfield tried something similiar in 13 minutes Reid playing a long ball forward to Simpson, his cross didn’t beat Page who cleared.

Then 2 minutes later a real piece of opportunism from R.Nimmo picking up a loose ball in midfield he took a couple of strides toward goal and smacked the ball goalwards from 25 yards only to see his effort beat Mitchell in the visitors goal but crash back off the cross bar.

In 19 minutes great work from Bremner on the right saw the midfielder get in a deep cross to the back post where Heath did well to retrieve the ball heading back across goal but a free kick was awarded for an infringement on a Jeanfield player by Brass.

With pressure mounting from the home side the break through came in the 21st minute R.Nimmo doing a great job to clip in a cross from the right, Brass head flicked the ball on and HEATH with a glancing header into the left corner of the net saw the Brox in front.

Locke made a great burst forward in 26 minutes with Reid doing well to stop him with a timely tackle. From the throw in a corner was forced which Bremner took but no one could a get a vital touch and the chance was gone.

In 31 minutes Mollison was booked.

A minute later and Moyles floated the ball forward which found Brass who flicked on to R.Nimmo who cracked another great shot towards goal but this time wide of the left hand post.

The Brox were knocking the ball about confidently which freed Locke on the right whose shot was saved by the feet of Mitchell, Jeanfield not without difficulty scrambled the ball clear with Broxburn players shouting for a penalty for handball as they did so but the referee waved play on.

Broxburn carved their way through the visitors defence once again in 39 minutes Page playing a fantastic long ball which picked out R.Nimmo who brilliantly flicked the ball over the advancing Mitchell with Reid just managing to get to the ball on the line and hack the ball clear.

In 45 minutes great battling for the ball in midfield saw Locke play the ball out to Heath who struck his shot but was off balance with the ball going left of goal.

Then in 1st half injury time Locke went on one of his trademark runs leaving defenders in his wake, he did brilliantly to float a ball towards goal which Mollison did well to clear off the line with R.NIMMO on hand to blast the ball home to give the Brox a deserved 2 goal lead.

HALF TIME: Broxburn Athletic 2 – 0 Jeanfield Swifts

S.Smith came on for Mollison for Jeanfield.

In 48 minutes R.Nimmo won a corner off S.Smith. The ball in from the corner caused havoc in the Jeanfield defence with a real old fashioned goal mouth scramble with Broxburn unable to force the ball into the net.

Three minutes later and R.Nimmo was tormenting the visitors defence again winning another corner this time off Reid. He took the corner kick himself the ball was headed back across goal which found Locke who didn’t quite catch his shot correctly with Mitchell making the save.

In the 53rd minute Page fouled McLeish 35 yards out. Scott took the free kick but Heath took control for Broxburn and cleared.

Whithead was booked for a foul on Brass in 56 minutes.

In 59 minutes Locke played in a great ball to Heath in the penalty area on the left with the winger cracking a shot which Mitchell did well to palm onto the post.

On the hour Campbell was booked.

Jeanfield made 2 changes F.Smith and Robertson coming on for Fergus and Northcott.

In 71 minutes R.Nimmo fouled Northcott. The free kick was passed down the left to Northcott who got in a cross which Watt dived to save easily.

In the 73rd minute the Brox struck again from a corner on the right taken by Heath, the ball was swung over deep to the back post with PAGE rising majestically to head the ball back across goal and into the right hand corner.

A minute later McLeish went off to be replaced by Struthers. Time 74 minutes.

Three minutes later the Brox made changes R.Nimmo, who had picked up a knock and Heath replaced by Thomson and Davidson.

In 81 minutes D.Nimmo replaced Moyles.

The referee produced a red card for substitute Struthers for what looked like dissent.

From a rare Brox error on the night ROBERTSON took full advantage for Jeanfield getting into the penalty box on the right hand side and rifled in a shot which Watt couldn’t keep out to give the visitors a consolation goal.

Downie came on for Locke in 87 minutes.

A minute into injury time and Downie did well to set up Bremner on the left side in the penalty box his shot cracking off the outside of the left post.

Munro was booked for Broxburn.

7 minutes into stoppage time D.Nimmo was also booked.

A deserved victory for Broxburn taking them to the top of the league.

Then a moment of controversy Linn cut in from the left wing getting himself into the penalty area where he went down. There were loud claims for a penalty which the referee did not grant.

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Penicuik Athletic 22 August 2023

Broxburn returned to league action to face what has historically been their bogey team Penicuik Athletic. Having maintained their 100% start to the season by beating Peebles Rovers in the cup last Saturday the Brox made only 1 change to Saturdays line up Turner replaced Campbell. Penicuik have had a strange start to the season with 2 poor results losing 6-0 at promoted Glenrothes and 9-0 at Tynecastle. Things got back on track last Saturday edging out Luncarty by 3-2. The Cuikie also made 1 change to their starting line up Melvin replaced Baptie.

In the 3rd minute Penicuik made an opportunity for themselves McManus playing in a ball to Dawson with his back to goal but he couldn’t play on to a team mate to get a shot off.

The same combination were at it again in the 8th minute as the visitors positive start continued Dawson’s strike for goal was was straight to Watt who collected well.

Broxburn were starting to hit their stride now Locke played a great defence splitting pass down the right wing to Munro who swung over a pinpoint cross where Leiper did superbly well to get a hand on it with Downie on hand to finish if the keeper had made an error.

In a similar incident at the other end McManus played in a cross which Dawson battled strongly for with Watt with the keeper doing well to punch clear.

Against the run of play to that point the Brox took the lead Brass controlled the ball in midfield moved forward and slid the ball to DOWNIE who controlled the ball and fired the ball into the bottom left corner of the net past Leiper. Time 16 minutes.

Turner was fouled by Taylor-McKenzie, took the free kick himself which was well met by Leiper who punched clear.

Great play from Locke in 25 minutes, he turned his man brilliantly and played in a cross which was well defended by Young with plenty red shirts on hand to pick up on any error.

Broxburn were nearly 2 to the good a minute later Munro again providing a fine cross which Downie won at the back post but his header went just wide.

A mistake by Millar on halfway allowed Penicuik a 2 on 2 situation but the visitors didn’t get it right Watt doing a great job to usher Dawson wide with his cross then unable to find Wardlaw. Time 36 minutes.

A nice free flowing Brox move was ended by captain Locke blazing high over the bar.

In 39 minutes Munro fouled Wardlaw about 20 yards out slightly left of centre. Taylor-McKenzie took the free kick which he struck well curling from left to right and just clearing the cross bar.

In 55 minutes a long ball was played forward which Locke chased and challenged keeper Leiper who had come off his line but Locke caught the ball with his hand when trying to knock the ball past the keeper and was promptly booked by the referee.

Then a touch of class by the Brox skipper Brass’s persistence down the right saw him cross for LOCKE who audaciously back heeled the ball into the left corner of the net.

The Brox had their tails up and from a Turner corner Brass won the header which went just over the bar.

Penicuik made a change in 66 minutes Buckle went off to be replaced by Roue.

Two minutes later Locke played in a ball from the right Young conceding a corner. Turner took the kick the ball was part cleared but fell to Page whose header was cleared from inside the 6 yard box.

Locke went off for Broxburn to be replaced by Thomson.

In 77 minutes the visitors squandered a chance on the break Wardlaw laid the ball off to Dawson but his shot was high and right.

A minute later Downie came off for Wilson.

Taylor-Mackenzie was booked for a foul on Bremner. Time 81 minutes.

Two minutes later the pacy Wardlaw fashioned a shooting chance on the left which he fired wide.

In 84 minutes Taylor-Mackenzie and Dawson were substituted for Fraser and Philp.

Davidson came very close to his first Broxburn goal cutting inside on the left and curling a shot which hit the cross bar, the fall up falling to Brass who was also out of luck.

A chance fell to Wilson in 89 minutes but he shot well over.

In a high energy finish to the game a misunderstanding between D.Nimmo and Page allowed Wardlaw clean in but he shot straight at Watt who did real well to save.

East Of Scotland Premier League: Broxburn Athletic v Glenrothes 29 July 2023

The league season got underway at the Albyn with newly promoted Glenrothes being the visitors. Broxburn made 3 changes from the side who had beaten Pollok last Sunday, Douglas, Brass and Dryden replacing Trialist No.9, Heath and Millar.

Glenrothes made 2 changes from last weekends 7-0 home defeat to Cumnock, Kinnes and Leishman replacing Thompson and Lumsden.

There was a strong breeze blowing down the ground in Broxburn’s favour but it was the Premier League new boys who carved out the first chance Leishman shooting high over the bar from 25 yards.

The breeze was making it difficult for both sides to settle.

Locke was prominent for the Brox in 6 minutes striding forward and sliding a great ball through to Douglas but the striker was flagged offside when in decent position.

A long ball from Page found Brass 30 yards from goal he controlled the ball turned well and smacked a shot well over the bar.

From the corner Broxburn seemed not to have learnt any lessons allowing Bridgeford to pick out C.Schiavone who crashed a shot against the home bar.

Broxburn responded Turner taking a corner from the left which Grierson won in the air but conceded  another corner. Turner then took the corner from the right side finding the head of Brass with his effort goalbound to the left keeper Connor pulled off an amazing save to deny the Brox striker.

In the 20th minute Brass was fouled by Grierson, from the free kick Wallace conceded a corner. Turner’s corner was met by the head of D.Nimmo whose effort went straight to keeper Connor.

Both sides were finding it difficult to string passing moves together.

In 38 minutes Broxburn played their way through the centre of the Glens defence Munro finding himself with a chance from 12 yards where he shot to the keepers right but once again Connor pulled off an amazing save.

From the corner taken by Turner Douglas got his head to the ball but his effort flew just over the bar.

Another defensive lapse almost caught Broxburn in 44 minutes Glenrothes playing the ball in from the right Shearer was all alone at the back post his shot brilliantly saved by Donoghue. From the corner from the left Shearer was unmarked but could only get a knee to the ball at the back post which went wide.

Broxburn started on the front foot after the break, Davidson doing well on the right sending in a great cross but Brass couldn’t get the ball past Connor.

Douglas was in the clear a minute later on the left got into the penalty area where he went down under challenge. The referee waved aside the home teams loud claims for a spot kick.

Brass was then next to get in an effort moments later but again the visitors defence was resolute in defence of their goal.

Turner made good ground down the right playing the ball inside to Davidson who blazed a shot high over the bar.

Then Glenrothes responded in 54 minutes Brown got a great cross into the 6 yard box but no one in white was on hand to finish.

In 82 minutes from a Campbell cross from the left a Broxburn player went down but the referee again wasn’t interested in the home penalty claims.

The visitors were still dangerous when they did come forward from a cross from the left Campbell miscontrolled but fortunately so did McManus and the chance was gone.

In 85 minutes Heath did well getting over a great cross R.Nimmo’s first shot was blocked but his second was on target and cleared off the line by Smart.

With the pressure building the Brox broke Glens hearts with a late winner Locke touching the ball on to DOWNIE inside the penalty area and he hit a shot hard and low across the keeper it clipped the left hand post and went in. Time 89 minutes.
